Medulla Art Gallery presents, local Trinidad & Tobago visual artist Brianna McCarthy’s ‘Vetiver Night Women’ series. If you are in Trinidad and have the chance, you should check out this amazing exhibition which opened on May 14th and will be available for viewing until June 5th, 2015. Brianna is a self taught artist that communicates visually through a variety of mixed media from traditional paint to masking and performance art as well as fabric collages and installation pieces. For her, this ‘Vetiver Night Women’ series is a reflection on traditions inspired by an exploration of the female perspective in the course of revolutions, as they carry within their beings ancestral memories for descendants. In her work she aims to open up new discussions examining issues of beauty, stereotypes, representation as well as documenting the process.
Each of her stylized woman has a goddess like presence as they are her interpretation of the heavenly night sky and constellations. She establishes every woman as guardians of the Universe, opposed to the view of men holding the standard of power. Brianna mystically paints stars on black bodies representing the original dark matter of the cosmos and her use of vetiver invokes the plants magical feminine association. She explores the physical and metaphysical worlds as she takes us through the processes of self-discovery and self-actualization within known and unknown spaces. As you enter into her dream world full of vibrant colors it is almost as if you are having an intimate conversation with the Universe and its divine feminine energy.
